The nofollow attribute was started by Google’s head of webspam team, Matt Cutts and Jason Shellen, using Blogger.com in 2005. They have the nofollow copyrighted and are subject to a royalty free patent policy. The reason for this html tag is to make engine results more relevant for search terms.
